Rick has over 20 years of financial services and investment experience working with individuals, small businesses and Fortune 500 companies. Driven by his passion for excellence and a genuine concern for people, Rick founded Financial Independence, LLC to help clients balance their goals and dreams with their financial resources and secure a more comfortable future.

For Rick, helping people stay on top of the many financial responsibilities of today's fast-paced and complex world is fulfilling work. He always puts his clients' needs first, approaching them with honesty and integrity. He measures success based on his ability to provide clients with peace of mind and the financial freedom to live with confidence and comfort.

Prior to founding Financial Independence, LLC, Rick was co-founder and partner at Halperin & Campbell, LLC. Formerly, he was Vice President in the Consultant Practice at CIGNA Retirement & Investment Services. Rick has also held financial positions at Fleet Financial Group, BankBoston and Allmerica Financial.

Rick has earned the ChFC® (Chartered Financial Consultant) designation, an advanced financial planning designation granted to a select group of individuals who have completed an eight-course curriculum focused on the comprehensive financial planning process. He holds an MBA with a concentration in Finance from Providence College and a Bachelor's in Accounting from the State University of New York.

Rick resides in Smithfield, RI and enjoys spending time with his wife Nicole and three sons MacKenzie, Mitchell and Charlie. He is a self defense expert who instructs martial arts throughout New England, a passion that has led him to multiple black belt certifications over the past 20 years. He also enjoys playing the guitar and is actively practicing yoga.

Mark Lavallee, MBA, CFP ®

Vice President

Mark has over 20 years of financial services and investment experience working with institutions, corporations and individuals. Mark greatly enjoys his role in helping people develop finer lives by solving financial problems and obstacles and getting their financial household in good order.

Prior to joining Financial Independence, Mark was a Vice President with MFS Investment Management, with a focus on institutional investments and relationship management for senior MFS relationships. Mark earned the Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) designation in 2007, studying at the College for Financial Planning. The CFP® certification requires passing five core curriculum tests in Estate Planning, Taxes, Retirement Plans, Investments, and Insurance and Planning, as well as an integrated ten hour final exam. In 1993, Mark received his M.B.A with a concentration in finance from Boston College and a B.A. from Clark University in 1985.

Mark resides in Franklin, MA and enjoys spending time with his wife, Patty, and his three daughters, Sara, Emily and Abby. Mark also enjoys volunteering, sports, coaching his kids, and is an active participant in regional triathlons.

Patricia Watson

Executive Administrator

Patricia (Patti) has over 20 years of financial services and office administration experience. She is steadfast in her efforts to continuously deliver exceptional service and the highest quality experience to clients. Patti views every client interaction as an opportunity to deliver an exceptional client experience. She is also an integral part of the behind-the-scenes office activities, insuring hassle-free account administration for clients.

Steve Cronholm

Client Experience Manager

As Client Experience Manager, Steve's primary responsibility is to identify ways to provide clients with an exceptional experience beyond their financial planning and investment activities. This includes designing educational workshops, client appreciation events, client communications, streamlining processes and procedures, leveraging office technology, and providing other informational activities. Steve is also a client so he brings a unique perspective to the work he does at Financial Independence.

Steve graduated from UMass Lowell with a BS in Mathematics and a Master's in Education. He started his career in educational publishing and then transitioned to the high tech industry where he has over 25 years of business experience. When he isn't working, you can find him focused on projects around the house, hiking in the mountains of New England, or sailing on Narragansett Bay. He also enjoys tutoring math at the Attleboro Literacy Center. Married with two grown children, his family remains his top priority.

Why we do what we do.

For many, it's not so much what you do, but why you do it. It's what moves you from a product to a service or from doubt and skepticism to trust and loyalty. It defines who we are.

What did you do prior to starting Financial Independence?

I spent about 14 years working in the areas of corporate finance and investments for companies like Fleet Financial Group, Bank Boston, and CIGNA.

How did those experiences affect you?

While I greatly enjoyed finance and investments, I had reservations about working in the corporate arena long term. I made great strides climbing the corporate ladder, but with each step, I realized more and more that the culture and politics were not for me. I wanted to help people more directly and impact their lives in a positive way — to truly make a difference. But I wasn't sure how to leverage my skill sets to accomplish this.

What brought it all together for you?

During the stock market crash of 2000 — 2001, many of my friends, family and colleagues approached me for a second opinion on their investment portfolios. Upon review, I suggested they seek the advice of a professional advisor. To my surprise, most of them were already working with one, something I found very disconcerting, given the poor condition of their finances and investments and their obvious lack of confidence. So I offered to find an experienced advisor they might consider. As I interviewed potential candidates, I asked about their philosophy, approach, and fees, but many were either reluctant to, or not prepared to, answer these basic questions. It seemed they were more focused on trying to close a sale. Ironically, my simple offer to align some friends with an honest, competent advisor turned into a major undertaking, and a very frustrating one at that, given my commitment to help.

So what happened?

As my search continued, I thought a lot about why it was so difficult to find what I believed to be an honest, unbiased, and experienced advisor. Then one night, everything seemed to fall into place. I woke my wife, Nicole, and told her that I had decided what I wanted to do. I explained to her that I felt there was a real void for honest and ethical advisors who put their clients' interests first, and that I believed I could leverage my skills, experience, values, and desire to make a difference in people's lives by advising them personally. Her biggest concern was leaving the security of a corporate career, its compensation and benefits, and starting over, but I'm fortunate to have a very supportive wife who believes in me.

Where are you today?

It's hard to believe it is now eleven years later. Financial Independence continues to grow with the addition of a second advisor, Mark Lavallee, and together we work with a wonderful group of clients, providing the personal and comprehensive service and attention I originally envisioned. We subscribe to the adage: That which we give attention to, thrives. And the attention we give our clients is fueled by passion, not obligation, making it that much more rewarding if they thrive.

As an independent Registered Investment Advisor, we are fee-based and free to act on your behalf and in your best interests. We do not accept any form of investment-based commissions whatsoever.

Since we are independent, we offer no proprietary products, choosing instead to work with a team of experienced money managers employing modern asset allocation strategies. This type of approach is intended to help smooth out returns and increases the chances of success in all types of markets. Because we are paid by you, not the investment companies, our interests are in direct alignment.

We have a strong, outside network of CPAs, attorneys, real estate and mortgage advisors, and others who provide the expertise necessary to develop a holistic financial plan. Should you already have relationships with these advisors, we are more than happy to work with them as well. And as your advocate, we're not afraid to challenge them. It is a team we manage so you don't have to.
